My anatomy and physiology class ended today, so now I don't really know what to do with all of my free time! I spent so many hours this semester studying in the lab...

Explanation for the design: in order to relieve some test anxiety, Dr. B calls all his exams 'festivals.' For our 'final festival,' I made these souvenir buttons and stickers for the class, which we all wore today.

I live in land-locked Kansas, which means I don't usually see Hawaii license plates on my way to work. But today I did, and my first thought was of how a Hawaiian car got to 75th and Troost. My second thought was that Nissan had finally invented a flying car. Needless to say, I was pretty excited for a few minutes.

Marta is getting very impatient with me. I know this because she is taking out her frustration on her big stuffed German Shepherd toy (named Ripper to honor the German Shepherd that tried to eat my leg earlier this year). Whenever I tell Marta I have to study and I don’t have time to play with her, she goes to her toybox, pulls out Ripper and shakes the bejesus out of it while glaring at me, as if to say, “This is YOU.”

Yesterday I started to open one of the many textbooks I have to study, but Marta, thinking I had nothing better to do, nibbled at my elbow until I gave in and drove her out to Shawnee Mission Park.

We walked a bunch of the trails there. It was cold.

She also jumped in the lake, even though it is starting to freeze over in some places.

I wasn’t about to jump in a freezing lake, no matter how intently she stared at me.

Such a demanding dog! But she is way more fun than studying.

Marta's Pumpkin Pie

Exactly one year ago today, I adopted my fabulous dog Marta from Animal Haven, which is a no-kill shelter in Merriam, KS. Today, to celebrate the anniversary of her adoption, I baked a pumpkin pie because she loves loves loves pumpkin anything.
She didn't get to eat the whole thing by herself because I also love love love pumpkin anything, but she did get a nice big piece! (and I gave her the milk bone on my slice because I don't care for them).

Today was bath day for Marta, so I took her to my grandparents' farm so she would get extra dirty first. But when we got to the house, a giant >6-point whitetail stag was standing in the way! Marta has never encountered a deer before, and she crept up to it and gave it the stink eye, which made the big guy start running...which made Marta's chase instincts kick in...which triggered my dog-mother instincts because I didn't want my doggie to end up lost or worse, impaled on those points if the deer should decide to turn around.

The three of us ran at absolute full speed for a half mile (I came in last place, probably because I only have two legs). The deer was able to jump the stone wall and escape, which was good timing because my lungs were about to explode from breathing all that cold air. Marta was a bit disappointed that I made her stop looking for him, but escorted me back to the house anyway. That cold air made me cough so bad, Grandma threatened to give me her pear-whiskey remedy, which I've avoided ever since childhood.

The good news is, Marta got some pumpkin pie (and pumpkin is her all-time favorite food).

I spend a good part of the afternoon trying to arrange all the pieces for my first-ever quilting project. I guess Marta got irritated with me for not paying attention to her, even though we ran 6 miles together yesterday and biked (she runs next to me) for another 2 today. When I went to get my camera to take a picture so that I would remember how I had laid out everything, here's what I found: DOG ON QUILT.

And when I asked her to move, she started scrambling the pieces. On purpose.

But you know what? Marta is right. The quilt design really needs more contrast. I'm glad she stopped me before I got too far.

Marta Solves the Tug-A-Jug Toy

The Tug-A-Jug is a treat dispensing dog toy that my dog Marta loves to play with. It has a narrow opening at one end (where only a few treats at a time can come out for a patient dog) and a screw-top lid on the other (which makes putting treats inside quick and easy for an impatient human). She usually can get a whole meal out of the Tug-A-Jug in about 7 or 8 minutes. But then Marta watched me put the treats in the lid side, and she decided it would be much more efficient for her to unscrew the lid, too. Turns out, you don't need opposable thumbs to do this!
